Energy is stored using a high-voltage capacitor, which then discharges instantaneously into the magnetizing coil. This generates a large current in the coil, and in accordance with Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction, a magnetic field is produced around the coil. When the magnetic field is strong enough to overcome the intrinsic coercive force of the magnetic material, the material will retain residual magnetism after the external magnetic field disappears—thus completing the magnetizing process.
